Smile Makeover Options to Improve Your Smile

A smile makeover is something that you may want at just about any age. If you are frequently hiding your smile and avoiding social settings, treatment could be good for you. A makeover can address a number of issues. The problems could affect your mental health and oral health. The good news is that your dentist can recommend the right treatment and restore your smile. You can then be happy about the way you look and feel.

Conditions that a smile makeover can treat

Many people struggle with conditions that affect their smile. Some of these are minor and barely noticeable. But others can have profound consequences on an individual’s health and the aesthetics of their mouth. Crooked teeth and misaligned jaws are a common challenge that people encounter. Another issue that dentists treat is discoloration and staining on the teeth.

Improving a smile can also be necessary after an injury or following the effects of poor oral hygiene. A broken or chipped tooth, for example, can be embarrassing and painful. Losing a tooth is even more problematic. This can lead to self-esteem concerns as well as difficulty in eating.

Teeth whitening

This cosmetic treatment is common among adults who dislike the color of their teeth. Over time, teeth can stain due to poor brushing habits. Eating and drinking certain foods and beverages can also stain teeth. In-office whitening treatments can have almost immediate results, brightening teeth by several shades. The dentist will use a hydrogen peroxide gel and use light or heat to activate it as it sits on the patient’s teeth. The ingredients will break down the stain-causing molecules.

Crowns and veneers

If brittle teeth or trauma to the mouth has broken or chipped a tooth, the person may not want to smile. A good smile makeover in these cases is to either get a crown or a veneer. A crown is usually made of porcelain or ceramic. It fits over a damaged tooth, protecting it and restoring its form and function. A veneer is tooth-colored and attaches to the front of the affected tooth. A dentist will use this to reshape a tooth that has suffered a crack or chip.

Dental implants

In the most serious cases, a patient could be missing a tooth or multiple teeth. For many years, dentures were the most sensible option. Today, a dentist may recommend dental implants for this smile makeover. Implants are durable and can last up to 20 years or more. Implants consist of titanium posts, a smaller piece called an abutment, and a natural-looking crown. It requires multiple visits to the dentist’s office and at least two surgeries to put in implants.

Dental bonding

This is the fastest smile makeover procedure. It only takes one dental visit. The dentist will apply an etching solution to the affected teeth first. This will make the bonding material stick better. The dentist will shape the bonding material and polish it. This type of smile makeover can cover dental staining and damage.

Composite dental fillings

Silver or amalgam fillings used to be the only option for treating cavities. Dentists recommend replacing these fillings because of the presence of toxic mercury. A patient can now choose to have dental composite fillings. These tooth-colored restorations do not have metal components. The dentist can match the color of these fillings with the natural color of the patient’s teeth. This can make the composite fillings hard to notice.

Gum recontouring

This smile makeover is for patients with gummy smiles. Thick gum tissue tends to cover up most of the teeth. It hides the rest of the teeth, making the teeth look smaller. In some cases, a patient can have uneven teeth because of irregular gumlines. This makes the teeth look crooked and unhealthy. Gum contouring can remove some of the gum tissue, which will result in a more even smile.

Clear aligners

Misaligned and crowded teeth can be challenging to clean. This can result in many other dental issues. Most patients prefer clear aligners to traditional braces when it comes to teeth straightening. These dental straightening devices can straighten teeth without scratches, cuts, and punctures.

The right treatment is available to change your smile

Whether for health or cosmetic reasons, a smile makeover can have a big impact on the way you look. If you regularly hide your smile out of embarrassment, you can soon stop doing this.
